For today’s episode of “Financing the American Dream,” I took a trip to Pontiac, Michigan, to meet with CEO Mat Ishbia of United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM). UWM has helped countless people achieve the dream of homeownership, which is likely why Mat’s company is known as America’s No. 1 wholesale mortgage lender.

Walking through the UWM facility’s full-size basketball court, we talked about how Mat’s vision all began when he played for Michigan State in college. He used a lot of what he learned from his coaches and teammates on the court and applied it to business. It’s easy to see the influence—there’s all kinds of basketball memorabilia found throughout the corporate headquarters.

“I’d like to thank Mat for giving us all a look at the great lending company he’s built.”

UWM started out with 12 members and has since grown to a whopping 9,000-strong staff, and the company has been the No. 1 lender for six consecutive years. Their approach is to help mortgage originators close homes quickly, efficiently, and affordably. Instead of getting caught up in the frustrating parts of mortgage lending, UWM focuses on what people are most passionate about—homeownership—and it makes employees excited to be part of it.

I’d like to thank Mat for giving us all a look at the great lending company he’s built. If you’re thinking about fulfilling your own dream of homeownership, or if you have any questions about mortgages, feel free to reach out to me anytime. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
